M22 by Lumenis
The M22 is an IPL machine created by Lumenis, a global leader in developing and commercializing energy-based solutions for the Aesthetic and Vision markets. This non-invasive procedure is the first and only FDA-approved intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment for dry eye management.
IPL is Intense Pulse Light Therapy that uses high intensity light energy to heat and destroy targeted structures in the skin.
It uses broad-spectrum light pulses opposed to laser which is a similar treatment that uses a single focused wavelenth. This option provides a gentler service for the patient.
How Does it Work?
Multiple wavelengths of light are targeted into the patients skin, which heats the targeted chromophores. The chromophores then break down and go through the natural process of being removed from the body, resulting in improvements in skin tone, texture, and appearance.
What Does IPL Treat?
Dark Spots: Ex. Freckles, Sun Spots
Vascular Lesions: Ex. Rosacea, Telangiectasias, Spider Veins
Acne: Ex. Acne scars, Inflammatory/Non-inflammatory outbreak
Dry Eye: Ex. MGD (Meibomain Gland Dysfunction)
Skin Rejuvenation: Ex. Skin texture
How Does IPL Improve Dry Eye?
IPL is a clinically validated light treatment for dry eye disease caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). The efficacy of IPL for patients with dry eye due to MGD was first discovered by Dr. Toyos during treatment of facial rosacea, eventually leading to its application in ophthalmology. It addresses the root cause of DED by reducing inflammation in the ocular area. The treatment eliminates abnormal blood vessels and stimulates the meibomian glands to restore normal oil production. This process improves gland function, stabilizes tear distribution and enhances overall eye comfort.
What To Expect
Preparing for Your Appointment:
To prepare for your appointment you should avoid:
Using skin brightening agents or serums for the week before your appointment
Using tanning beds 1 month prior to your appointment
Getting botox for at least 3 months before your appointment
Taking oral isotretinoin, tetracycline, or doxycycline in the 3 months prior to your appointment
The M22 Treatment:
During your treatment your provider will apply a cool gel on the treatment area and cover your eyes with shields to protect them.
As light is applied to the skin, you may experience a warm/hot or uncomfortable sensation.
Post-Procedure Care:
While side effects are uncommon, your eyes may feel slightly more sensitive the days following your procedure. If you do experience dry eyes, you can use preservative-free artificial tears. If you do experience dry skin, you can use a natural mositurizer for you skin such as Aloe.
Following your treatment, your skin will be photosensitive, so we recommend avoiding sun exposure and wearing sunscreen.
